A slightly different day out for me. It started by visiting some old haunts around Middleton in Teesdale (some of my earliest holidays were there in the mid-late 60's), including High Force waterfall. I then headed up tot he top of the dale and round, via Alston, into Weardale. I spent the afternoon at Killhope Lead Mining Museum. This is well worth a visit, and havign been down various (non-working) coal mines I was interested in the differences with a lead mine.
Lead mining was a little different to coal, primarily the volumes are much, much lower. There is no gas to worry about either but rockfalls were very common.
